I must admit straight up front that I slept on this palette – it’s been out for a year already. If you know me, then you’ll know that I love a good eyeshadow palette, and a nude one is my jam. But this looked meh at first glance and to be honest, I haven’t been impressed by Maybelline in the eyeshadow arena, so wasn’t inspired to purchase. Added to that, so many influencers touted it as a dupe for the Too Faced Natural Nudes Palette which I also thought looked average and leaned too pink and muddy toned for me.
I ended up buying this Maybelline Nudes of New York Palette on a whim. I was at Chemist Warehouse and found that they were having a huge sale on Maybelline. I wanted to get another one of their new Lifter Glosses and saw one solo palette sitting there in a display unit that had clearly been ravaged by shoppers. I grabbed it fast, and then noticed other people around me looked longingly at it in my hands, just waiting for me to put it down so that they could pounce on it. I found that I just couldn’t let it go for that reason alone lol – plus it was only $19, down from $30.
It sat in my drawer for a couple of weeks and then a colleague of mine went shopping, picked this up and asked me if she’d made a good choice. Leaving aside that she went makeup shopping without me (wtf), I thought that I should pull this palette out of the drawer and test it out.
I’ll start by saying that this palette is actually really good and I was surprised. In fact, I was pretty shocked. While they don’t swatch the best, as you’ll see below, they are in fact beautiful shadows. They are very finely milled, but not powdery, and they show up on my medium to medium deep skintone. The shades are an interesting combo of warm toned and cool toned neutrals along with just a couple that are pink-ish based. The mattes perform really well, applying smoothly. They don’t muddy when missed together and retain their colour through the day. The shimmers are pigmented and are not glittery. I found it better to apply them with my finger, as with most shimmers. The selection of shimmer tones and cleverly curated mattes means that you can achieve a multitude of looks using this palette alone.
I think the Maybelline Nudes of New York Palette is a great option for someone starting out with makeup, and also for those that are more experienced. It’s a perfect all in one palette, a staple that you can take on holiday and know that you’ll have all your bases covered. It’s a great size for travelling because it’s not too big. I love the updated packaging design direction that Maybelline has chosen for this and it’s lifter glosses, of which I’m a fan (I’ve posted about them on my Instagram, but let me know if you want a full blog post here).
Below are some pics of a look I wore this week, taken in my car with the light blowing out my face. I’ve also retouched it so that you can see the colours a bit more. I have worn this palette quite a few times, but I need to get better at taking the time to take selfies in places other than my car (lol).
If you have the palette, let me know what you think.
Stay safe and have a wonderful day.
