Maybelline Superstay Matte Ink Liquid Lipsticks Ruler Seductress

Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink Liquid Lipsticks in Ruler & Seductress

I’ve tried many a liquid lipstick in my day. A lover of long last lip colour, especially in a matte formulation, liquid lipsticks were a phase that I grabbed with both hands.

My favourite liquid lipstick brands of the moment are from Nars, Mellow Cosmetics and Gerard Cosmetics (yep that may be a surprise but they’re amazing). From the drugstore I like Colourpop Ultra Satin and Wet n Wild have amazed me with their formula too.

These Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink Liquid Lipsticks had come on my radar when I was sent one about a year ago. It was the darkest colour, nearly black and not something I’d wear on the daily. However, it didn’t close the door for me. When I looked at the other colours to choose, at that time, from I wasn’t too impressed. There were a lot of pinks and the nudes seemed too light for me.

Cut to now, the range has increased and one of my fave You Tubers, Shahleena, has raved about the colour selection that is available now. However, they retail at $23.99 here in NZ and I can purchase a Mellow Cosmetics liquid lipstick for less. Why did I eventually part with my money? Well, they’re on sale at the local supermarket for 40% off and I took advantage by purchasing two that I thought would work for me: Ruler which is a deep berry with some deep hot pink in it, and a nude in the shade Seductress.

The Product

The formula is interesting. It doesn’t fully set down to 100% and it takes quite a while to almost dry. I’m actually really glad I chose two quite different colours because they behaved very differently from each other.

Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink: Ruler

This colour is beautiful. Just the perfect choice if you don’t want to go for a full-on red, but want a stronger pop of colour in your everyday. I loved it on my skin tone (NC42 in Mac at the moment) and thought it worked really well with my simple eye look (see below). The colour was super pigmented, in fact it stained my arm when I switched it. It came off my lips easily though with an oil based cleanser.

However, in this darker shade it doesn’t layer well. I had tried to add a bit more to my inner lip to minimise ‘butt-hole’ mouth, but you’ll see from my reference pic that it deteriorated. It seems to attach itself to itself (if that makes sense) and lift off. For me, because I’m used to trying to ‘make things work’ I could eventually save it by using a berry lip balm from Mecca and kind of rehydrating the whole thing (not pictured).

Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink: Seductress

This lip shade is the perfect nude for me. I was super excited about this because as you know, finding the perfect nude is a journey for me (a happy journey though lol). It added just the right amount of colour and is seems to have the perfect balance of a peachy nude balanced with a hint of pink that means it will work for both warm and cool toned looks.

This colour performed so much better on me than the deeper one. I could layer it and it didn’t deteriorate. It does however feel that tad bit sticky given that it doesn’t 100% seem to set down. So, if you’re doing to eat a burger while wearing this, I’d tend to wipe it off and apply fresh again. This shade works nicely with a deeper lipliner to add more dimension if you need it.

The Prognosis

I’m torn on this one. While I love the colour of Ruler and know I’ll wear it again, I hesitate on recommending it because of its performance. If you do buy it, be careful. This is one of those ones that is temperamental and if people are looking at your mouth (and not in a good way), then find a mirror and check out what’s happening there.

Now, I would absolutely recommend Seductress. It’s a beautiful colour, BUT be aware that the formula isn’t as you would expect for a liquid lipstick.

If you love a dry matte liquid lipstick, this is not it. The benefit is that it isn’t drying, but that’s also its drawback – it’s doesn’t fully dry. It stays a little tacky so you’ll need to keep that mind.

I do know that lots of my readers are make up mavens though and this won’t be a barrier for you – especially for these gorgeous colours.

Will I buy more? It’s a yes from me.

Have a beautiful day my lovelies.
