Sometimes when I receive a product to review, it’s easy, I can put it on and tell pretty quickly whether I like it or not, whether it performs with other products and whether it’s worth the blunt.
This product was a bit of a long game. Why? Because it claims that it’s a skin repair cream that can ease the symptoms of a number of ailments from ageing skin to burns to insect bites. Put simply, I had to wait until I or others in my family experienced some of the things on that list in order to test it!
Virtuous Skincare – The Brand
Virtuous Skincare started in New Zealand 2001, in New Plymouth by a Naturopath, Herbalist and Therapeutic Massage Therapist who had become concerned with how many products contained chemicals. She started making skincare that was made with all natural, plant based herbal remedies and is free of synthetic preservatives, parabens, sulphates animal derivatives etc. They are also cruelty free.
They sound pretty good so far …
The packaging is a standard plastic tube containing 100g of product. It is also eco-friendly and recyclable.
The product itself is a cream as per the pic below. Why I feel I need to say this is because a lot of products that claim to address a number of issues, and say that they are a cream, are actually balm based, like PawPaw Cream for example.
The cream is smooth and easy to apply and it doesn’t leave a heavy residue on the skin. It is fragranced with a light fragrance that I can’t quite put my finger on. It contains chamomile, calendula, comfrey, lavender, rosehip, vitamin e, burdock and manuka. So if you mix all of those up – I guess this is the smell that comes out!
I gave this cream a good bashing. I mean it. For the last six weeks I’ve had it in my purse, in my bathroom cupboard, by the front door, sitting in the kitchen – it’s been everywhere with me so that I can pounce on every opportunity to use it and report back (that’s how much I love my readers lol). So, here’s the rundown of the things I tested that were listed in the claims …
As you know, I am a lover of skincare and as I’ve grown older, my needs have changed and I need a little more from my skincare than I used to. It takes a lot for me to try a ‘one-size-fits-all’ cream on my face of all places! I gave Virtuous Skin Repair Cream a go as a night cream and was pleasantly surprised! While it’s not as heavy as I’m used to for a night cream (my skin drinks product up like a camel in a desert), it was still good. My skin didn’t react negatively at all. I woke the next morning to find that it looked smooth and hydrated. For reference I’d also tried the Say Yes range of night creams as well and they were terrible, so Virtuous got a bit tick from me. It would be a lovely day cream to wear too. Did it combat aging skin? I’ll say no, because that ship has sailed, but I think it adds a lot of moisture and hydration to the skin without adding greasiness. And you know it’s good for you.
I had this in my bag when I was called to an emergency. I was urgently called upon to be the makeup artist for a wedding 90 minutes before the ceremony. Luckily I had makeup with me (I’m not a makeup artist, but I am a beauty blogger so had quite a bag of goodies) and my Skin Repair Cream, so armed with those I went to help out. In the end I only had to do makeup on the Maid of Honour as the makeup artist turned up – whew – but this cream was such a helper. I used it as a body moisturiser on the bridal party who rubbed it all over their legs and arms, and I especially used it on the bride who forgot to take her socks off resulting in big sock marks on her ankles. We used this to rub them out!
My three year old son developed a red rash on his legs which was raised and itchy. I rubbed this cream all over the rash and he said that it made him feel better. Hours later the rash had subsided and he kept coming back to me to have more cream put on as he knew it helped him. I was super impressed with this.
All of the above. I’ve used this on chapped lips and they have made them nice and soft (note to product development team – you need to make some lip balms!). I’ve used on my eleven year old son’s face that was dry from wind-burn and it moisturised it without his skin reacting at all. He’s started using it in the mornings too before school. I’ve used it on my dry hands that I’m always washing over and over again – I’m a full-time working Mum of three – nuff said.
If you’ve reached this far then I think you know what my thoughts are. I’m really impressed with this product and I highly recommend it. It’s one of those products that, as a Mum, I want to keep in my bag at all times for whatever life throws at us. I know that I’ll use this on the daily over summer and I might get a tube for my Mum too!
Knowing that this is Kiwi made and contains amazing ingredients that are good for you, makes it extra awesome.
