Review: Mary Kay Cosmetics City Modern Collection

I was lucky enough to receive the full Mary Kay City Modern Collection at the Talk Beauty Event held recently in Auckland.

I didn’t know much about Mary Kay other than it was similar to Avon or Nutri-metics in the way that they have direct sellers (who sign up to join) and you can hold parties.

As you know I’ve always said that I don’t care if a product is drugstore or high-end – if I love it, I love it. Spoiler alert! I was pretty much blown out of the water with these products.

The City Modern Collection consists of two eye-shadow palettes, three lipsticks and a cross-body bag (gift with purchase), seen below.

Keep on reading to see what I thought of each product.

The first eyeshadow quad is called Metro Modern (seen above on the left) and is an absolutely beatiful selection of colours. I have swatched for you below. You’ll see:

  • a metallic silver
  • a deep matte burgundy/berry
  • a metallic pink
  • a yellow toned gold

All of the colours have swatched true and are very pigmented and smooth to apply. The texture is lovely and buttery. Obviously with the colours here you’ll need to use a matte transition colour and a highlight colour as well as these ones. However, I was able to create some lovely looks with this palette. It’s now in my top drawer – which means I use this regularly.

The gold alone deserves a moment of silence.

The second palette is called City Sophisticate and is a deeper, cooler toned collection.

In consists of a metallic gun metal grey (which actually looks like a rose gold tone in the pan), a deep charcoal matte, an icy metallic silver and a very deep deep navy with a shimmer.

This palette is perfect for a deep smokey eye and a nude lip. The colours are all so pigmented. The gun metal grey was a bit of a surprise because of how different it looks to the colour in the pan, but when you see them swatched below, you can see that the collection is impeccabley curated. The icy white is just lovely for an inner corner highlight.

There were three lipsticks in the set too. From left to right (below) we have:

  • Naturally Chic – a beautiful nude
  • Oh So Currant Cassis – a rich warm brown with a hint of red in it
  • Berry Stylish – a deep berry colour

The formulation of all of the lipsticks were very moisturising and easy to wear. This was balanced with the amazing pigmentation that they have.

I’ve been wearing Naturally Chic on the daily and just love the colour. I can change the tone easily depending on the lipliner that I’m wearing on the day.

I love wearing the other two when I want a little more colour in my look.

I’ve swatched all three on my arm below. For reference I am currently and NC40 in MAC foundations and all of the swatches in this post were taken in natural light and outside.

I’ve included a couple of looks below where I am wearing some of the collection. On the left I’m wearing the Metro Modern palette on the eyes and Naturally Chic lipstick. On the right I’m wearing the City Sophisticate palette on the eyes.

I do apologise for the drastic differences in light in these pics, but hopefully you can see the how I like to wear one palette in the daytime and one palette for a more dramatic evening look.

Also included in the kit was the cute little crossbody bag seen in my feature photo. It is a gift with purchase with an $80 combined purchase.
